Plasma Tweeter ... 1°act

I began my Tweeter building one year ago, and now (finally) I may publish very interesting results.

In order to achieve the following results

      • Easy building
      • Properly working without any calibration
      • High electrical efficency
      • High acoustical pressure
      • Wide frequency response
      • Low cost

I developed a new Tesla Coil design that I called STTC (Self Tuning Tesla Coil), but I can't publish its electrical schematic because I will request a patent. Now I only say that my STTC (tuned at 1,5MHz) is built with a common IRF540 and, fed with 60Vdc (2A), it produce corona spark up to 45 mm (about 1,77 inch).

Probably, if you serch "Plasma Tweeter" with Google, you find that all systems are built with a Tesla Magnifier tuned at 20 - 30MHz and drived by a power pentode EL509 (or similar). This is because many people think that the only way to produce a noiseless corona spark is working at so hight frequencies, and they must use a power tube. Today, I may say that at 20MHz spark is effectively noisless only if it is too small (about 5 - 6 mm), but if you try to produce a longer spark, it became noisy again.

So i decided to build a tesla coil tuned at 1,5MHz in order to reduce driver's cots and complexity.

Following photos show my first prototype built in a PC power supply's box: it contains RD power driver, and BF modulator. I will rebuild all system to include power supply too.

      • High voltage coil is rolled up a common glass (diameter of about 70mm)
      • Supply is fed trough three rings hung at the center of the high voltage coil

In the following photo, you can see RF power driver and BF modulator:

By clicking here, photos of my first Tesla Coil prototype and nice experiments with high voltage.

In order to produce a noiseless spark, I built a simple IONOPHONE (patented by Sigrfried Klein in the 1950's) ... probably I used IONOPHONE first in Italy.

Following photos: a primordial combustion chamber:

So buil, my tweeter offer spectacular results! Acoustic pressure is enough for an easy listening in a medium size room.

Electrical data are:

      • Power supply: 60V - 800mA
      • High voltage coil tunend at 1,5MHz
      • Maximum input signal: 30V picco - picco
      • Frequency response at -3dB: 800Hz - 30kHz

Then I built a new combustion chamber.

And now, photos show my tweeter powered on.

14 - March - 2004: I built a new audio modulator with an automatic system of firing. Now tweeter work properly with a good woofer and they sound so likely. I also solve the ozon problem: I increased temperature in combustion chamber so ozon decompose it self.

For any question, doubt ... write me!
